Collectors  and  some  dealers  can  easily  and  readily  decide  whether 
a  quarter  of  this  date  has  been  altered  from  any  following  date 
(usually  a  ’58).  When  the  Government  altered  the  standard,  in 
1853,  they  decreased  the  weight  from  412}  grains  to  385  grains, 
making  a  difference  of  274  grains  on  each  dollar  of  subsidiary 
money.  To  show  the  change,  they  put  arrow-heads  at  side 
of  date  and  sun-burst  on  reverse;  consequently  a  quarter  with¬ 
out  arrow  heads  of  this  date  would  weigh  nearly  7  grains  more 
than  a  quarter  of  any  date  thereafter.  In  a  balance  scale  a  poor 
quarter  without  arrows  of  this  date  would  weigh  more  than  a 
new  or  uncirculated  one  of  1854  or  following  dates.  Another 
test:  they  are  always  struck  over  a  ’52,  the  curl  of  the  2  show¬ 
ing  below  upper  knob  of  the  3.
